Gender, Sex and Culture Midterm Review
Midterm #1 will be on June 20, 2006. Please bring an #882 Scantron, a #2 pencil, a pen and several sheets of blank paper. The exam will draw from questions discussed in quizzes 1-5, assigned readings, class activities and discussions and videos. Please be prepared to answer two of the following essay questions.
1. Why do women seek to get married? Are men’s reasons for getting married different from those of women?
2. Compare and contrast the responses of the women’s and men’s panels related to gender role enculturation, sexual learning, and adult sexual expression.
3. What may lead a woman to become a single mother by choice? What considerations might she make in choosing a sperm donor?
4. How have Arlie Hochschild’s observations about the second shift and the stalled revolution changed since the early 1990s? Is the third shift more of an issue for parents and families today?
5. How do the three phases of romantic love function as a reproductive strategy?
6. Compare and contrast the Taita, Copper Inuit and Japanese approach to the meaning and value of romantic love.
7. How have cultural norms for teenage girls changed since the 1990s? How has this affected teen male sexuality?
8. What are some of the ways that reproduction is mediated by culture?
9. What are the benefits a female primate may gain from mating with more than one male?
10. Should adults be prosecuted if it they unknowingly have cyber sex with a minor?
